Washington ICE Custody Paths
An ICE detainer creates a common gap between a county roster and community status. ICE describes a detainer as notice that it intends to assume custody and a request that another law-enforcement agency notify ICE before release. It can also request that the agency maintain custody for up to 48 hours beyond the time the person otherwise would have been released. If ICE takes custody, leaving Washington County Jail is a transfer, not freedom.
The county release record should be checked for destination or receiving agency. Then the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, known detention site, and Detention Reporting and Information Line can address immigration custody. A later ICE release is a separate event. It may carry reporting or field-office instructions, and an immigration-court case can continue after physical detention ends.
| Event | Meaning | Source |
|---|---|---|
| County release to ICE | Custody transferred to immigration authority | Sheriff release record and ODLS |
| ICE detention | Person remains in immigration custody | ODLS or DRIL |
| ICE release | Physical ICE detention ended | ODLS recent-release result and ICE instructions |
| No ODLS result | Ambiguous, not proof of release | DRIL and responsible agencies |
Search Washington ICE Detainee Releases
Use the official ICE Online Detainee Locator System. It accepts two search paths. An A-number search uses the nine-digit Alien Registration Number and country of birth. Add leading zeros when the A-number has fewer than nine digits. The biographical search uses exact first name, exact last name, country of birth, and an optional birth date. Exact spelling matters.
- Choose A-number search when the official number and country of birth are known.
- Otherwise enter the exact first and last name with the correct country of birth.
- Use birth date if available to narrow similar names.
- Read the result for ICE custody or a qualifying recent release.
- If the result is missing or unclear, call DRIL and cross-check the county handoff record.
The current ODLS scope includes ICE custody and qualifying Customs and Border Protection custody lasting more than 48 hours. An official ICE resource says release records remain in the locator for 60 days. It does not search people under 18. A no-result can reflect spelling, age, timing, scope, a different authority, or a release outside the public window.
Verify Washington ICE Release
A strong check begins with the Washington County Jail record. Request the release date and time, release type or authority, and destination or receiving agency. If ICE is named, search ODLS with exact identifiers. When the result shows a recent release, keep the result and check date. Then follow any official ICE reporting instructions supplied to the person.
If ODLS is inconclusive, call the Detention Reporting and Information Line at 1-888-351-4024. The researched hours are Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. DRIL offers basic case assistance and language support. It is the official fallback, not a commercial locator.
The verification chain is different when the last custodian was federal criminal authority. A federal defendant may be under USMS or BOP before an ICE handoff. Use the federal court and federal custody record to establish that stage, then use ODLS for the immigration stage. The Washington County release-search overview helps separate these systems before the ICE check begins.
Note: Save the exact spelling, A-number, country of birth, source, and check time when reconciling an ODLS result.
Washington ICE Release Records
The county and ICE records prove different events. A sheriff-produced release record can show when Washington County custody changed and which agency received the person. ODLS can show current ICE custody or a qualifying recent ICE release within its public scope. An immigration-court docket addresses proceedings, not necessarily the precise physical release time. Each record should stay tied to the agency that created it.
| Record item | What to request or record |
|---|---|
| County handoff | Release time, authority, destination, receiving agency |
| ODLS search | Matched identity, custody or recent-release result, check time |
| ICE instructions | Field-office reporting or other conditions supplied officially |
| Court record | Proceeding, order, hearing, and case status |
For the local portion, Washington County accepts public-record requests through its sheriff form or by telephone at 740-373-6623 ext. 4003. A focused request should identify the person and booking range and ask for existing records, not an explanation. The office publishes no fixed booking-record fee or turnaround.
ICE records access is subject to federal procedures and privacy limits. Use ODLS and DRIL first for practical status information. When a formal record is needed, follow the agency's official records route and provide the identifiers and narrow date range required for a useful search.
Washington ICE Release Contact
No official ICE detention center was identified in Washington County. The county should not be presented as the site of an ICE facility, and the Washington County Jail should not be relabeled as one. ICE can still receive a person from local custody or become a later custodian. The correct contact depends on the current record, not on an assumed local address.

If the county handoff is not clear, contact Washington County Corrections or use the sheriff's official public-record request. Ask whether the destination was ICE, another jail, ODRC, federal criminal custody, treatment, or the community. The answer determines which source should be used next.
Do not infer a detention center from a field-office check-in. A person can be out of physical detention while still having immigration agency and court obligations. Likewise, an immigration court date does not by itself prove present detention.
Washington ICE Detainer Records
The official ICE detainer explanation distinguishes notification and temporary hold requests from a final immigration outcome. A detainer signals an ICE custody interest. It does not itself prove that ICE ultimately assumed custody, that a person was removed, or that a later ICE release occurred. The local release and receiving-agency records are needed to confirm the actual handoff.
Timing is also easy to misread. The described hold request can extend up to 48 hours beyond the otherwise scheduled local release. That period relates to the transfer request. It is not the ODLS coverage period, a promise of release at 48 hours, or a standard length of ICE detention. The official locator's recent-release coverage is a separate 60-day public window described by ICE.
- Detainer
- ICE notice and request concerning a person held by another agency.
- A-number
- The immigration identifier used with country of birth in ODLS.
- Handoff
- The physical transfer from one custodian to another.
- Field-office check-in
- An agency reporting obligation that is distinct from immigration court.
Ask each agency only for the event it owns. The sheriff documents local processing. ICE documents immigration custody. The court documents its orders and proceedings.
Washington ICE Release Limits
ODLS is not an all-time archive. The published recent-release span is limited, exact-name searches are sensitive to spelling, and people under 18 are excluded. Some CBP custody appears only when it meets the system's qualifying duration. A no-result cannot carry the weight of a verified release record.
ICE release also does not establish the status of every other case. A state warrant, federal criminal matter, or other custody interest may exist. Do not merge an ICE result with ODRC, BOP, VINE, or the county roster. Compare dates and receiving agencies. If the sources conflict, contact the office responsible for the particular event.
For a recent Washington County handoff, preserve the county release record even after ODLS changes. The county record explains why the local roster ended. ODLS then supplies the immigration stage within its public window. Together they can show transfer followed by later ICE release without falsely treating the first event as freedom.
Note: ODLS status is system-specific and time-limited; confirm unresolved results through DRIL and the agency that made the handoff.
